Who is this for?
This workshop is for anyone who enjoys working with their hands and getting a bit messy! For those who need to slow down, relax and craft in an informal setting. I aim to improve people’s wellbeing by helping them find an activity that boosts creativity. No previous experience needed, we will explore the very basics of pottery making.
This workshop is suitable for ages 16+ .
Join us for a 2 hr. workshop to create a piece of pottery: a bowl, a cup, a planter... be creative and playful! Create something shaped with your hands with the help of some tools. Children and families welcome. You will get a choice to fire and glaze your pottery, if you got for this then your pottery should be ready for collection in April.
What to expect:
During this workshop I will start showing participants examples of the things they can create. Then I will continue with the safety measures to then hand them a ball of clay to make a bowl or a mug using the coil pottery technique, which is one of the three main hand-building techniques used for making pots in ceramics.
Alternatively, for those whose hands need an easier way of pot building, I will show them pinch pottery, using only the tip of their fingers to shape the clay.
After explaining how to create the base of the pot, we will move onto rolling all of those sausage/snake-like coils which will we use to shape the pot. Using slip, tools and patience we will slowly build up. Once people are happy with the height of their pot we will blend the coils or if you are planning to keep your pot as an ornament we can skip this step.
We need to use tools for this part.
At the end of the session I will ask people to mark the bottom of their pots with their initials and to smooth surfaces with a sponge for a nice even surface.
NOTE: The pots need 6 weeks in between air drying, firing and glazing. Please be aware you will get your pottery a month and a half later.
